What's up beloved? We are currently strolling through the Gospel of Mark and taking some glimpses of what the Good News really is! Today we are going to talk about something that we can easily overlook in scripture. It's actually quite sad to me how that for so many years, I rushed right past this idea...
"33 The whole town was assembled at the door, 34 and He healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. But He would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew Him. 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, went out, and made His way to a deserted place. And He was praying there. 36 Simon and his companions went searching for Him. 37 They found Him and said, “Everyone’s looking for You! ” (Mark 1:33-37 HCSB)
Check this out, massive amounts of people are coming to the door and bringing others with them to be healed, to have exorcisms, and to see Jesus. The passage literally said "the whole town" was at the door! I'm not quite sure how many people that was but it sounds like a lot! Jesus did perform many miracles, what do you expect! He brought Heaven to Earth! It was bound to happen.
This however is not what we miss. Does anyone notice something interesting about what happens? In the midst of doing all these amazing, Godly things, Jesus pauses and does something we put on the back burner!
Not only does he pray, He wakes up early enough that it was still dark outside, leaves the house, and prays by himself. The passage also gives the illusion that he was gone a good amount of time. This is inferred by the fact that the disciples had to go and search for him, and they don't seem happy when they find him!
To Jesus, prayer was just like the slogan of Nike! When it comes to prayer, "Just Do It!" He needed it! He wanted it! He didn't care what Peter, James, or anyone else though! He simply Just Did It!
The crazier notion is the idea that Jesus never once had to ask for forgiveness. That's right even the perfect, Son of God sought prayer even though he never had to ask for grace or mercy! What did he pray for? What would he talk about? What were his motives? The simple answer is that he loved his father and he loved spending time declaring his kingdom over the coming situations in his life!
His disciples clearly didn't get it! Like them, it's easy to think, "Jesus, you have the ability to heal these people and your not doing it you lazy, selfish carpenter! What kind of leader are you!"
But Jesus knew he needed this time to know exactly the Father's next step! So I have a brief question for you. Something to seriously reflect on...
If the perfect Man needed an intimate prayer life with God, how much more do we, the imperfect man, need an intimate prayer life with God?
